PlayStation Move’s reaction time is 22 milliseconds

Closed

ConnectedConsoles reports that Mark Green of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe just happened to mention the response time of the PlayStation Move in an interview with the UK’s Official PlayStation web site.

“So I can tell you that it is accurate to the nearest millimetre, precise in motion tracking and likewise in seeing where the controllers are in 3D space.” said Green. ”Its reaction time, from movement to delivering to the screen, is just 22 milliseconds and on screen it is pixel precise”.

While there has been some concern over the PlayStation Move‘s response time, 22 milliseconds seems pretty speedy to us.

Sony to rename its PlayStation Move party game to “Start The Party”

1

For the past two months we’ve heard about the PlayStation Move’s flagship party game called Move Party that’ll have players on screen in augmented reality partaking in outlandish mini-game “fun.” While we don’t know how fun these mini-games will be, we do know that Move Party is only a working (See: temporary) title. A new Sony trademark filing for “video game software” called “Start The Party” leads us to believe that Move Party will be officially renamed Start The Party. Since this mini-game extravaganza is a first party title, it makes perfect sense for Sony to trademark a new name. Expect an official announcement of the name change straight from Sony come E3.

Sony on PlayStation Move shovelware: we don’t have to approve it

1

There are only two things in the history of gaming that can make gamers ashamed of the video game industry they love so much. ET for the Atari 2600 and shovelware.

As Wii owners know, motion control has proved to be the holy grail of shovelware. With motion controls baked in, who could resist a shoddily coded and designed game experience? Since Sony’s PlayStation Move provides a similar motion control experience, it’s no doubt that some developers think Move could be a similar shovelware honey pot.

How does Sony feel about this?

“Now, are there going to be things like that [shovelware]? Sure,” Senior Vice President of  Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s Rob Dyer told Gamastura. “We’ll do everything we can, whether it’s up-res, add trophies, and do things and make it network-only so you don’t see it on a disc, but at the same time, we don’t have to approve it if we don’t want to go down that path.”

Sony has had a game concept approval system since the days of the PlayStation One and it sounds like they’re going to make sure it continues to keep shovelware out of their PlayStation Move lineup. As Dyer mentioned, if a game isn’t quite up to snuff, it will be put on sale in the PlayStation Network instead of store shelves.

Blog | Playstation Move: It’ll Move You

0

What makes the Playstation Move have the potential to be a lot more than a gimmick, is that they are not (they’ren’t?) just making it for casuals, they are making it for hardcore gamers and casual gamers alike. Its precision allows you to do things that just wouldn’t work well with the Wii, like online gaming or hardcore games like Socom 4, while still being able to have fun with not so serious games. It’s taking motion controls to a whole new level.

The 1:1 tracking will defiantly up the experience, making for an all around better game in the end, because could you imagine playing games like Demons Souls or God of War 3 with Move, swinging your sword at just the right time to make your final blow on the Flamelurker or ripping off Helios’ head with kratos’ brutal strength? That’s the potential Playstation Move has.  It’s what makes Move more than just a Wiimote 2, its flexible enough for both kinds of gaming, making it possible to play games that you wouldn’t normally see being played with a motion controller.

Having two controllers in your hands at once to throw a wide variety of punches or to pull back a bow will only add to the realism of gaming, giving it a whole new meaning of augmented reality, because your moves and decisions will effect what happens in the end, because it will not just be something you can wiggle around and get results with. It will take more than that to accomplish your goals.

The best thing is, is that Sony isn’t forcing people to buy a motion controller just to play their games. They’re giving you a choice to play their huge line up of games with ether a Dualshock controller or a Playstation Move controller. You can choose to play games with one or the other and still have a great time with the games you’ve come to enjoy and love, and that’s what makes Sony a real winner.

Sony’s Playstation Move will be the best motion controller to date (when it’s released); not only because of its pin point accuracy, but because of the games and potentials it will offer the future of gaming.  It will bring a lot more people to the Playstation Nation and really give the other console manufactures a run for their money. I really do think Playstation Move will change are gaming experience forever.

In the end though, it’ll come down to who markets the hell out of their motion experience the most, but as we all know, selling the most doesn’t make it the best (a.k.a. MW2). Playstation Move is set to Move us this fall with games such as Dukes, Socom 4, Sports Champions, Slider and many more titles, with their 1:1 tracking and true next gen graphics. It’s something you shouldn’t miss out on, no matter what kind of gamer you are. So are going to Move on with your gaming experience or stick with your Dualshock controller?

Proto-PlayStation Move in the works before Wii, called PlayStation Wand

0

We know why you’re reading this. You finally want some shred of proof to tell that Wii fanboy that Sony didn’t “copy” Nintendo. Rest assured that the video above contains said proof.

The year was 2003 and the Sony’s EyeToy was making its debut on the gaming scene. Richard Marks, one of the minds behind the Eye Toy and later the PlayStation Move, had apparently been demonstrated the PlayStation “Wand” to game developers as a possible controller. Effectively a proto-PlayStation Move, the PlayStation Wand  worked in conjunction with the EyeToy and a glowing ball at the top of the controller. While it appears that the Wand had no motion sensors, the glowing ball was used to track motion nearly identically to those on the PlayStation Move.

That’s motion control 3 years before the Wii. Thoughts? Feelings? Need a place to vent about how Sony still stole Nintendo’s awesome ideas? Feel free to write as much as you want in the comments!

First PlayStation Move Commercial jabs at Natal, Wii

0

The “Vice President of PlayStation” Kevin Butler is at it again. In the very first commercial for Sony’s PlayStation Move, Sony makes sure to compare it to the Wii and Microsoft’s Project Natal. On how accurate Move can be when it tracks movement, the fictional took a jab at waggle, “‘Not just like this (waggle motion), but like this . . . ‘Cause real boxers don’t hit like this (waggle).”

Now onto Project Natal bashing. On its lack of buttons: “Plus, PlayStation move is not only crazy precise, it’s also got what we in the future call “buttons,” which turn out to be pretty important to those handful of millions of people who enjoy playing a shooter or platformers or, well, anything that doesn’t involve catching a big red ball. I mean, come on, who wants to pretend their hand is a gun. What is this? The Third grade? Pew. Pew. Pew. Pew. *skeptical laughter*”

Like Sony’s ad campaign for a change or do you think it’s another flop like Sony’s previous campaigns? Let us know you’re thought in the comments!
